Magnetohydrodynamic oscillations as a tool for space weather forecasting

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick

Abstract

Forecasting of extreme events of space weather is one of the major challenges in prevention of natural catastrophes. The recent discovery of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) oscillations in active regions of the corona of the Sun opens up an interesting opportunity for the diagnostics of the plasma of the solar atmosphere, and, potentially, its ability of producing a flare or a corona mass ejection. We shall use the high-cadence EUV movies of coronal active regions, obtained with the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on the Solar Dynamics Observatory to study the parameters of MHD oscillations, searching for the seismological signatures of the precursors of solar impulsive energy releases. The special attention will be paid to propagating disturbances of EUV intensity and decayless oscillations f coronal loop.
