Modelling Sociality in Carnivores

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Biology

Abstract

Project Aim:
To analyse the social behaviours of carnivores and to investigate the underlying ecological and evolutionary processes that lead to social behaviours in carnivores.

Main Objectives:
1. To investigate the bioenergetics of sociality, investigating resource gain in relation to predation rate, prey size and metabolic rate
2. To investigate the potential for use of extant data to quantify the drivers and risk of sociality in carnivores
3. To investigate the evolutionary consequences of sociality in relation to behavioural and genetic responses

Project overview:
The project can be broadly separated into several phases of work to achieve the main objectives and fulfil the project aim within the three year timeframe.
