Stars, Gas, and Dust at High Resolution in the Triangulum Galaxy

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

Understanding how stars form and how the interstellar medium evolves is critical in understanding the evolution of galaxies, and in this project the student will undertake continuum and spectroscopic studies of the interstellar medium in nearby galaxies such as M31 (Andromeda) at high spatial resolution for detailed comparison with our own Milky Way, as well as comparisons with other more distant galaxies. We are currently leading a consortium of UK Universities working with the East Asian Observatory collaboration in running the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) in Hawaii and the project will involve data taken with JCMT, the Herschel satellite and other observatories.
