Spectroscopy and Isospin Symmetry Studies of Exotic Neutron Deficient Nuclei

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

The aim of this project is to use York's developed expertise in knockout methodology to explore different nuclear shapes and to subsequently analyse neutron-proton correlations along the line of nuclei with equal numbers of protons and neutrons (N=Z), such as 80Zr. The data for this experiment will be obtained at the Michigan State University at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory using a primary beam of 92Mo, followed by a 1n knockout of the secondary 81Zr beam. The lifetime of the 2+ states of 80Zr will be measured along with the lifetime of the 2+ state of the neighbouring N=Z nuclei 78Y. Measurements of these lifetimes will be used to probe isoscalar (T=0) np pairing correlations along this N=Z line. This data will also mean that NSCL will have obtained lifetimes of the 2+ states of all N=Z nuclei from 64Ge to 80Zr, with the exception of 66As.
If possible, highly exotic proton-rich systems near A=100 will also be explored for the first time using a new spectrometer at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. This will allow further investigation into the fundamental differences between nn and pp interactions through the comparison of mirror nuclei, in particular through mirror energy differences.

Results and Impact Following winning the prize for best first year talk at the STFC Nuclear Physics Summer School in 2018, I was invited to give a 30 minute talk at the IOP Nuclear Physics Conference in Paisley. The talk was given to around 100 postgraduate students as well as numerous researchers from a range of institutions from across the UK.
