PhD Studentship in Low Cost Portable Vehicle Emissions Measurement System

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Engineering

Abstract

Recent focus on energy and emissions within the transportation sector has necessitated the
development of low cost means of measuring greenhouse gas and noxious emissions from
vehicles during real-world driving. Admissions by Volkswagen of defeat devices within their
vehicles have led regulators to target on-road testing of vehicles as a means to guarantee
compliance with emissions standards and reduce pollution levels within urban areas.
The position will focus on development of a novel, low-cost method of measuring
greenhouse gas and noxious emissions from on-road vehicles. The work will be housed
within the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight, http://www.csrf.ac.uk/, and will report to Dr
Adam Boies. The project will seek to incorporate existing low-cost electrochemical sensors
within a device for measuring real-time emissions efficiently and accurately. The researcher
will seek to develop a blue-tooth connection with an existing Android app and
accompanying software to measure
