Application of Biologging Technology to the Study of Migration and Behaviour in the Manx Shearwater, Puffinus puffinus - WCUB, ENWW

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP

Abstract

The miniaturisation of electronic biologging technology has opened new possibilities in the study of animal behaviour and tracking. By attaching biologging devices to a trans-equatorial migrant seabird at breeding colonies around the UK, I will build on a long-term collection of tracking and life-history data. This, combined with experimental manipulations, will be used to tackle some of the outstanding questions on the mechanisms and drivers of migratory behaviour and life-history decisions. As part of this research project, I will look to explore and advance methods of using simple data-loggers to make inferences on the behaviour of animals that are otherwise difficult to observe or follow.
