Development of functional purified iPSC derived astrocytes for neurological disease modelling

Lead Research Organisation: Aston University
Department Name: Sch of Life and Health Sciences

Abstract

This Project brings the expertise of Axol Bioscience Ltd and the expertise of both Dr Eric Hill and Dr Rhein Parri in modelling human neuronal systems In Vitro. This project will therefore provide this Student with first class interdisciplinary research training at the Stem Cell-Neurophysiology interface in the field of disease modelling e.g. monitoring functional neuronal and network activity in stem cell derived neurons.

Results and Impact I took part in the MRC Festival Zone in I'm a Scientist - Get me out of here!. This was an online forum where scientists took part in online chats lasting 30 minutes with secondary school students during their science lessons. The students were from schools across the country and were from a variety of school years and ability groups. The students could ask any questions they wanted about science, research, careers and other miscellaneous topics. In addition they could also post questions on the website so that scientists could post more detailed answers. The event lasted 4 weeks. Teachers reported that the students were very engaged and some students asked whether it'd be possible for the scientists to come and speak at their school in person. I registered my interest in doing this but have not been contacted yet.
