A New Cosmological Residual Distribution Hydrodynamical Solver

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

Current cosmological simulations model the evolution of cold dark matter and gas from high redshifts through to the present. The gravitational evolution of the dark matter is currently handled very well, but the evolution of the gas is less well resolved. A variety of methods exist to model the gas dynamics by treating it as a fluid, including smoothed particle hydrodynamics and moving meshes. I am working on implementing a new solver type that uses a residual distribution method to solve the equations of fluid dynamics. This new implementation will be used to investigate the physics of cold flows in cosmological simulations.
