Optimising Triggers and Jet Reconstruction for Higgs Measurement with the ATLAS

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sussex
Department Name: Sch of Mathematical & Physical Sciences

Abstract

The measurement of Higgs production and decay to hadronic final states is of crucial importance in measuring the Higgs coupling to fermions, in particular to bottom and top quarks. To maximize the potential reach of the ATLAS detector using data gathered in Run 2 if the LHC schedule, Daniel Kelsey will develop new techniques for identifying and reconstructing complex final states of Higgs decays against vast background processes that leave similar signatures in the ATLAS detector.

Results and Impact Lead role in writing some blog posts for Sussex Experimental Particle Physics blog.
Intended purpose was to inform the audience on scientific seminars and research based trips to workshops and conferences that take place within the department - to help construct a wider knowledge of the life of a PhD student (or researcher) involved in scientific research, and activities, opportunities and involvement available.
Possible outcomes and informing the general public of the day-to-day workings of academics, researchers and students (particularly within science), and in particular informing students within the university (and within the physics department).

Results and Impact HiSPARC is a project in which secondary schools and academic institutions join forces and form a network to measure cosmic rays with extremely high energy. The HiSPARC project allows high school students to participate actively in real particle physics research, and experience what it means working in collaboration with other scientists from all over the world.
As part of a HiSPARC project I helped guide and take part in a session that had school children build a particle detector at school - this included some hands-on building of a simple detector, as well as guiding and informing the school children on how to do parts themselves.

Results and Impact As part of a larger project to present information about the studying and research of physics, and to disseminate information on the workings and outcomes of research in astrophysics and experimental particle physics I took part in one of a number of interviews and talks with current PhD students and researcher working in these areas at the University of Sussex.
These were recorded and placed both on a website, and within an app.
Two busses in Brighton were decorated with information about the physics areas and are used around Brighton for the general public.
Schools were also taken on trips on the busses with access to the apps and interviews.
