Abstract
Holographic methods are used to investigate phenomena in theories with holographic duals, particularly models of condensed matter systems including non-equilibrium steady states, quantum impurities and quantum compressible matter. The primary quantities studied are the entanglement entropy and the spectrum of excitations of such theories. Gauge/gravity duality provides a tool for computation in regimes where more traditional techniques break down, for example one can study the excitations of these systems away from the hydrodynamic regime, thus allowing for new insights into the behavior of strongly coupled systems.
