Cutting, Repairing and Reusing of CFRP with lasers

Lead Research Organisation: University of Strathclyde
Department Name: Design Manufacture and Engineering Man

Abstract

The aim of the project is to optimise the laser cutting of carbon fibre reinforce plastic (CFRP) using lasers. Lasers are already being used to cut CFRP but the objective of the research is to optimise the process using pulsed power laser to increase the cutting speed, thickness and reduce the heat affected zone (HAZ). Secondly, to clean and repair the composite material using lasers and finally to reuse the composite material for other purposes by the end user.
