Investigating school experiences of English trans youth: Working with young people to create best practice policy guidelines.
Lead Research Organisation:
Durham University
Department Name: Education
Abstract
This mixed methods research project aims to investigate the current experiences of trans youth in English schools, building on previous research and policy to produce best practice guidelines for educational establishments in collaboration (through focus groups) with these young people. Results from curriculum analysis are used in combination with insights from these focus groups to consider why relevant existing laws and guidelines do not appear to be reflected in most actual school practice. The study additionally uses large-scale quantitative data to statistically analyse the contribution of various identified trans-exclusionary or protective factors to both the overall school experience and the wellbeing of trans young people.

Results and Impact | I gave a presentation about my research at Ustinov College at Durham University, as part of their Global Citizenship seminar series. The audience were mostly postgraduate and undergraduate students, from a variety of different subject areas (mostly different to the topic of my research). I answered questions and we had a discussion afterwards. Several attendees also spoke to me after the event, some to say they had enjoyed the talk and had learned a lot, and others to discuss how they had related to the presentation as people who had previously experienced being a trans young person in school themselves. Giving this presentation has also led to an invitation to give another similar talk at another college at the University. |
