Wide Area Wireless Sensing Using a Power Harvesting Robotic

Abstract

The project will research the design,
prototyping and characterisation of an actuated wireless sensor network, where the
sensor nodes use energy harvesting to power their locomotion and wireless
communication functions. It is envisaged that the nodes would be small (tennis ball
sized) and would use their locomotion capability to distribute themselves throughout
the space to be sensed. The research will specifically target delivering distributed
sensing capability for spaces that are traditionally difficult to traverse due to
accessibility or environmental constraints. A key aspect to the research is the
measurement and management of a global energy budget for the entire system. The
research student will use National Instruments hardware and software to prototype
and characterise the nodes. This will involve myRIO, RF PXI and vision processing
capabilities.

Description Underwater gliders are underwater vehicles which move by use of a variable volume ballast.
The design of an underwater glider has been done. Experiments into the sizing and physical design were conducted to do this.
An underwater glider has also been prototyped and testing has began on the modules.
One use case may be for nuclear decommissioning.
Exploitation Route Further work on underwater gliders - a paper has been published discussing underwater glider design and would be of use to others looking to design an underwater glider given a set of their constraints.
