PASSIVE COHERENT LOCATION SYSTEMS (PCLS) FOR AREA SURVEILLANCE AND DETECTION

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Electronic, Electrical and Computer Eng

Abstract

Working to evaluate the feasibility of passive coherent location based on space borne illuminators of opportunity (IoO), undertaking a mix of theoretical, modelling and signal processing tasks. The open question in this area being how to extend techniques for ground and above ground surveillance with terrestrial sources of electromagnetic waves, to a surveillance area far out of the reach of such signals. This being where the space-borne IoOs come in, which could extend the use of these techniques to ocean, remote mountains and polar areas. The IoOs particularly of interest being those which provide global coverage, such as constellations of mobile communication satellites and/or global navigation satellites. The purpose of such research being for application in covert surveillance, and object detection and tracking.
