Improving the Effectiveness and Efficiency of Infrastructure Project Delivery through Data Driven Portfolio Management

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: The Warwick Manufacturing Group

Abstract

Through the Innovate UK project "improving Supply Chain Integration in Construction", Costain and WMG identified strategic planning as a missing portfolio management capability, impacting the efficiency of project execution. This PhD project will develop advanced data analytics approach to address this gap.

The project has 5 phases:

1. Development of conceptual framework (literature review)
2. Development of the advanced data analytics approach for identifying and clustering the different types of projects as part of the portfolio management process across business.
3. Simulation of the potential benefits to the efficiency of project delivery (cost, quality, time and environmental impact) demonstrating the business case for collaborative approach to strengthening the relationship with the supply chain
4. Pilot testing within a group of projects and identification of the inhibitors to adoption will provide valuable operational insight and new knowledge.
5. Finalisation of the approach and recommendations for broader implementation.

The EPSRC research area involved is: "Operational Research"

Because the project will be tested on the Water sector it also involves the area of "Water Engineering"
And because some of the approaches and thinking the project will adopt will be from manufacturing - it links to the area of "Manufacturing technologies"
