Leading for creativity: Examining coaching as a contributing factor towards employee creativity through LMX

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Management School

Abstract

Two main research questions will be answered through the conduction of this study: 1) To what extent does the quality of the relationship between a leader and a follower affect the follower's creative performance at work, and 2) Does coaching of the subordinates by their leaders help in the development of better relationships with them. Although more hypotheses will be examined, the main suggests a mediation relationship; Leaders who coach their followers will have a higher quality relationship (LMX) between them which will increase their creativity. The relationship therefore between coaching and the follower's creativity, is suggested to be mediated by the quality of the leader-follower relationship quality (LMX). Quantitative methods will be used for the conduction of this research with the use of already-established survey questionnaires, which will be distributed to all participants. A longitudinal approach will be followed, aiming to capture data at different time points.

Results and Impact My departmental division has decided to launch a new blog, in which researchers (Staff) of the division submit a blog post about their research. Only one person per month writes a blog post and I have been asked by my supervisor to submit my research on her behalf. The blog post is about the research that I am undertaking, however it was targeted for practitioners and industry professionals mainly. The purpose of this blog is to engage as much as possible with the industry and practitioners. By showcasing to practitioners that our research has a practical contribution and use, they are more likely to engage with us and provide us access to their companies and organisations. I cannot yet see direct impact as the blog is being handled by admin staff of the division and the post had been published a few weeks ago.
