The role of diatoms in the biology and ecology of Calanus in the Arctic ocean
Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Sch of Ocean and Earth Science
Abstract
Copepods of the genus Calanus represent up to 90% of the zooplankton biomass in the Arctic and represent a crucial trophic interface between unicellular primary producers and higher trophic levels, including fish, seabirds and marine mammals. They also play an important role in the biogeochemical functioning of the Arctic Ocean, recycling nutrient elements in the upper ocean via excretion and exporting carbon to depth via the production of large, fast sinking faecal pellets and during diurnal and seasonal migration behaviour. Despite their importance, we still do not have a mechanistic understanding of if and how the growth of Calanus spp. is influenced by the quantity and quality of their food, which are already changing in response to warming in the Arctic.
This PhD will examine the growth of Calanus spp. in relation to the quantity and quality of the available food, studying the interplay between growth-limitation by carbon (resource quantity) and nutrient elements and compounds (resource quality) using a combination of field experiments and stoichiometric models.

Results and Impact | An online conference, led by DIAPOD PhD students, is planned for May 2021 (delayed due to the pandemic). This focuses on the high-quality science produced by early career researchers and the contemporary issues faced. There will be a series of research highlights, employability workshops, and panel discussions on the future of UK Polar science. Over one hundred people indicated interest on social media, and 89 people have signed up to take part so far. |
