Sustainable Food Transitions: Agri-Environmental Relationships Between Domestic Food Production And Global Trade

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Cardiff School of Planning and Geography

Abstract

This research examines the relations, practices and policies of agricultural water use in two water-scarce nations exporting to the UK. The UK imports approx. 48% of its food demands and around 80% of its fruit, resulting in significant impacts on water resources overseas. Environmental degradation and social conflicts between farmers, conservationists and policy makers have arisen in semi-arid exporting regions and greater understanding is needed of the crucial interactions at catchment, user and institutional scales. The research will target Spain and South Africa
