Neuronal target-specific hippocampal memory functions

Abstract

Theme: World-Class Underpinning Bioscience

Spatial learning and memory are two aspects of the hippocampal function. It has been suggested that spatial memory is part of a hippocampal memory network that links memories across spatial and non-spatial dimensions. Different populations of pyramidal neurons located in the ventral Cornu Ammonis 1 (vCA1) of the hippocampus send direct projections brain regions involved in emotional processing. I investigate the functional role of these distinct projection neurons in the context of spatial memory to further our understanding of how the hippocampus relays memory to other brain regions.

The main goals of the project are:
1. Investigate spatial coding in vCA1 neurons.
2. Investigate whether any of these neuronal populations are differentially modulated by learnt
appetitive stimulus and whether they encode the stimulus valence independently of its location.
3. Investigate how coding in these neurons evolves during learning of locations with appetitive stimuli.

Title Different encoding of reward location in dorsal and intermediate hippocampus. Jarzebowski et al.
Description Data recorded to study encoding of reward location in the hippocampus. Calcium imaging data was recorded from dorsal and intermediate CA1 in mice learning reward locations. Included data consists of processed calcium imaging signal and location tracking data in .csv format. Files are placed in dated and animal-specific directories. The files can be read and processed by R code available at: https://github.com/przemyslawj/hpc-reward-coding.
