The Training of Doctors for the Future in Wales

Lead Research Organisation: Cardiff University
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

RATIONALE
Increasing numbers of patients with multiple conditions put a strain on the NHS and account for 70% of hospital bed-days. Rather than seeing multiple specialists, it is widely understood (and outlined in 'Shape of Training') that 'generalists' based in hospitals will play a key role in managing these challenges. But the changing training of future doctors has been little researched.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
How does the training of new hospital doctors need to develop to meet changing patient needs?
What challenges face "generalist" doctors in the Welsh NHS and how can they be overcome through education and training?
