The development of verbal morphology in heritage language speakers of Spanish in the United Kingdom

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Faculty of Humanities

Abstract

The proposed research therefore seeks to address this lack of linguistic enquiry by
examining the representation of aspect and mood, two areas which are expressed in different
ways in both languages, by heritage language speakers of Spanish in the United Kingdom. This
will be accomplished by collecting and analysing production, comprehension and processing
data from a cross-sectional sample of the heritage Spanish population in South East England.
Cognitively, this study will contribute to our knowledge and theoretical understanding of
bilingualism and the linguistic nature of grammar, and to intellectual development from a
linguistic perspective. Additionally, this research will provide insight into the heritage
population, and how their language use reflects their cultural identity as British bilinguals in
a minority group
