The efficacy of nostalgia in reducing objective measures of spatial anxiety

Abstract
The global population is ageing, and the demands for supportive health care will rapidly increase over the coming decades. Ageing is strongly associated with cognitive decline and environmental challenges may cause further confusion, disorientation and distress. Research has demonstrated how individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) respond positively to early interventions. The aim of my research is to develop early interventions to reduce anxiety-related cognitive deficits in virtual spatial navigation tasks.

Description | As part of the reward, my first paper has contributed to the literature a novel protocol for inducing spatial anxiety within a virtual environment. The manuscript requires minor revisions from the the Behaviour Research Methods Journal. |
Exploitation Route | Other researchers within the spatial cognition field can freely download the protocol and software for the spatial-anxiety induction, furthering experimental psychological research surrounding spatial anxiety and related constructs. |
Sectors | Environment,Healthcare |
Description | Conducting dementia research within the NHS |
Organisation | Southampton City Primary Care Trust (PCT) |
Department | Moorgreen Hospital |
Country | United Kingdom |
Sector | Hospitals |
PI Contribution | During my time at Memory Assessment & Research Centre (MARC), Moorgreen hospital, I kept recruitment databases/tools up-to-date and sign-posted suitable participants from my study to other studies within the centre. Mental health nursing students shadowed me during clinic visits and meetings. At talks, I raised awareness about MARC and their research support/services to boost their visibility within the University (across both Psychology and Occupational Therapy schools). |
Collaborator Contribution | MARC are the study site for one of my PhD projects involving people with Alzheimer's disease. Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust are the sponsor for my research. MARC accepted my proposal to run a PhD research project at their site. They offered me access to resources (i.e., recruitment tools/databases, clinical expertise and training, research participants, clinic rooms and equipment), which all made my dementia research study possible. |
Impact | No outputs to report yet as the project is in the finishing stage. |

Results and Impact | Alzheimer's Research UK Network hosted a public engagement event. I demonstrated a hands-on activity and discussed my research topic with members of the general public. The activity involved a computer task which forms part of my research methodology. |

Results and Impact | Student-led Research Methods Festival for 62 postgraduate researchers with media coverage via Twitter. The event allowed postgraduate researchers to showcase and celebrate the wide range of research methods used in their research. The day involved keynote speakers, workshops, an exhibition room with posters, photos, zines and interactive displays, and space for research demonstrations. I was a member of the committee organising this high profile event. Before the event, my role involved communications with the venue events manager, including venue visits and food arrangements. On the day of the event, I was part of the team that organised the set-up, as well as food preparations and registrations/check in for attendees. The South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership funded and supported this first time event, and expressed interest in running the event in the future. |
