Description | Since the last submission, I have conducted a scoping review of reviews to explore how 'marketing' is conceptualised in public health research that focuses on food and drinks marketing. I am not aware of this being rigorously assessed in the literature before. The review has enabled me to identified ways to improve conceptual clarity in future public health research. The results of the review have been prepared for publication and submitted to the journal 'Obesity Reviews', where it is currently undergoing peer review. I am also conducting interrupted time series analyses using market research data, to explore how expenditure on soft drinks advertising has changed following the announcement and introduction of the UK Soft Drinks Industry Levy. To my knowledge, this is the first time that advertising expenditure data has been used to gauge marketing activity that follows a public health intervention (in this case, a sugary beverage tax). |
Exploitation Route | I have explored ways that marketing may be used as a lens through which the responses of the soft drinks industry to sugary beverage taxation may be understood. Doing so may inspire different approaches to assessing the effects of fiscal public health interventions in other contexts, and for other products that may be taxed (e.g. high fat or high salt foods). By applying approaches and using datasets that have not been used in this are of study before, I will also provide methodological insights into feasible ways of measuring and assessing the responses of the commercial food and drinks industry to sugary beverage taxes. |
