The Development of Novel Supramolecular Photocatalysts

Abstract

This is a synthetic chemistry project in which we will design and subsequently develop a range of novel host-guest photocatalytic systems. This fundamental work will lead into their incorporation in polymeric materials, solid supports and flow systems. Much of the work will be synthetic in nature, but this will also involve a range of analytical techniques. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with Dr Filipe Vilela and, where appropriate, Prof. Martin Paterson.

Description My work has consisted of synthesising new host molecules for light mediated catalysis (Photocatalysis).
My work has mainly comprised of the synthesis aspect of this project so far, however results have been obtained regarding the catalyst's behaviour under light in one set of conditions.
Exploitation Route There is a strong potential for this work to be taken on by future students (both undergraduate and post graduate) in the Dalgarno group.

Description A Vortex Fluidic Device (VFD) for Streamlined Host Synthesis and Supramolecular Photocatalysis

PI Contribution As a second year PhD Student I (Mawgan Main) travelled to Flinders University, Adeleaide, Australia, to obtain training on the use of a Vortex Fluidic Device (VFD). I returned to Scotland with a VFD and trained a number of academic students and staff at Heriot-Watt university on the effective use of this machine.
Collaborator Contribution The Raston Group (led by Prof. Colin Raston) trained me in the use of their novel equipment (the VFD) and donated a machine to Heriot-Watt University for use in Scotland.
Impact Currently ongoing masters student project under Dr Scott Dalgarno and Dr Filipe Vilela is being carried out using the VFD for photocatalysis.
