Quantum communication with photonic cluster states

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University

Abstract

This is a PhD research project in experimental Physics. We will create medium scale entangled cluster states and use them for advanced quantum communication protocols such as in quantum networking, blind quantum computing and cluster-state quantum repeaters.

Description During the process of building a large photonic cluster state myself--along with my group--have achieved a number of results contributing to academic publications. These results range from fundamental investigations in the foundations of quantum mechanics and our understanding of reality, to practical applications contributing results towards the deployment of a quantum network.

A quantum network exploits the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and exploits the non-classical behaviours to promise ultimate and mathematically provable communication security. With such a network comes the difficulties of not only building but ensuring that there are no exploitations.

In addition to secure communication, there is the potential to perform distributed quantum computations. Quantum computers have received a lot of public attention, as they offer exponential speed ups of complicated algorithms that classical computers cannot efficiently compute. In the current era, a full scale universal quantum computer is still in the not so distant future, however that distance can be reduced if physical architectures capable of performing quantum computations are linked via a quantum network. In this regime, a photonic cluster state becomes a necessary resource. So in our work towards generating large and precise cluster states, we enable investigations on how these resource states will be exploited in the near future.
Exploitation Route We have implemented a realistic procedure to make sure that a future quantum network operates properly: https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.124.010503
