Developing a tool-kit of genetic resources and understanding of male fertility for effective cereal breeding

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Sch of Biosciences

Abstract

This studentship falls within the STEM area focusing on Biotechnology and Biosciences; it aligns to the UK Industrial Strategy by "capitalising on UK strength in Biotechnology" and will assist in building the UK Bioeconomy by further strengthening knowledge and skill development in the areas and application of plant breeding approaches, knowledge and germplasm resources. This will serve to increase UK productivity and competitiveness in Agriculture and Crop Production, and the Bioeconomy

Results and Impact The European Plant Science Retreat (EPSR) is an annual conference for PhD students in Europe to come together to present and discuss plant science. The conference has previously been held in The Netherlands, France, England, Spain, Germany and Belgium and is run by and for PhD students in plant science.

I was part of the organising committee of the 11th iteration of EPSR consisting of 9 PhD students from the University of Nottingham. My role was to contact sponsors, organise the venue, as well as take part of the selection process of speakers. The event was run 8-10 July 2019 at the University of Nottingham and engaged 130 PhD students from all over Europe and 8 international keynote speakers from distinguished institutes and universities. To keep the event free for all participants we secured external funding from journals, breeding companies, and plant science societies.

The EPSR 2019 promoted early career researchers by providing an opportunity for them to present their work to peers in an international context. All participants were encouraged to either give an oral presentation or to present their project as a poster. The event provided a great platform for networking between researchers from plant science organisations throughout Europe.

Keynote speakers at the event:
Prof Dame Caroline Dean, John Innes Centre, Norwich UK
Prof Zoe Wilson, University of Nottingham, UK
Prof Joop Vermeer, University of Zurich, Switzerland
Prof Sofie Goormachtig, VIB, Ghent, Belgium
Dr Daniel Gibbs, University of Birmingham, UK
Dr Matthew Reynolds, CIMMYT, Mexico
Prof Erik Murchie, University of Nottingham, UK
Dr Saoirse Tracy, University College Dublin, Ireland

Results and Impact The Festival of Science and Curiosity is an annual event held in Nottingham. The festival runs over a week and aims to bring science to the general public through workshops, seminars, walking tours, and interactive events. In 2019 I helped a workshop in local libraries aimed at children and families to spark their interest in plant biology. In 2020 I was involved in a seminar series held at local bars and venues aimed at the general public. This event created a platform for scientists to bring their research to the general public in diverse subject fields of economy, physics, and engineering, and to start a conversation to make science more reachable.
