A new method of vaccine candidate discovery has been termed reverse vaccinology 2.0. It is based on isolating mAbs from patients who are recovering from disease, identifying their cognate antigen targets on the pathogen before investigating the potential of the antigens as vaccine candidates8. When looking for a novel protective antigen for MenB, ideal targets would be highly conserved, surface exposed and have a serum bactericidal antibody4; SBA with human complement is a surrogate of protection for meningococcal vaccines due to low incidence rates.
