Abstract

Novel processing of 6xxx alloys for automotive applications
The project is focussed on the study of the novel thermomechanical processing conditions and alloy chemistry on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 6xxx aluminium alloys. The primary aim is to understand the effects of pre- ageing and prior deformation to precipitation hardening behaviour in 6xxx aluminium alloys in order to develop aluminium alloys with enhanced yield strength while maintaining a good ductility. A combination of SEM, EBSD, XRDI
DSC, hardness and tensile test methods will be used to characterise the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the samples as a function of thermomechanical conditions and alloying additions
