Data Mining to constrain new physics in the top sector

Abstract

The student will investigate an extension of the Standard Model enhanced with additional higher dimensional operators as part of the TopFitter collaboration. In particular, they will use the latest LHC and Tevatron top quark data in order to constrain the Wilson coefficients of operators involving top quarks. To do this will require the theoretical calculation of many top quark observables over a wide range of Wilson coefficients, followed by a fitting of these Wilson coefficients to the experimental data. This project requires the simulation of a very large sample of theory space and a comparison with a very large experimental data set, so requires considerable computational ability.
