Identifying and characterising astrophysical signals from ground-based gravitational-wave detectors

Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from binary neutron star (GW170817) with a counterpart gamma-ray bursts as well as subsequent observations across the electromagnetic spectrum was a breakthrough discovery that heralded the dawn of multi-messenger astronomy. Joint observations, combining data from across the electromagnetic spectrum with gravitational wave data, will improve our understanding of the astrophysics behind some of the most energetic phenomena in the universe. This project will investigate methods for detecting and characterising gravitational wave signals through joint analysis with data from across the electromagnetic spectrum (eg gamma-ray bursts). The project will also identify astrophysical properties of gravitational wave progenitors that can be better understood through such joint analyses.
