Numerical modeling of compact objects as sources of gravitational waves

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics

Abstract

THis project targets the modeling of compact objects in the framework of Einstein's relativity, study the dynamics of these objects -- either single objects or binaries -- and their emission of gravitational waves detectable by the LIGO or LISA detectors. More specifically, we aim to use the GRChombo code to model compact stars made up of fundamental fields and black holes surrounded by fundamental fields. Key goals are the determination of the stability of so-called hairy black holes and binary systems composed of boson stars, black holes and/or hairy black holes. The reulsting gravitational wave signals are to be compared with those emitted by vacuum black-hole binaries to search for signatures that would enable us to observationally discriminate between the different sources.
