Robotic sensing and in-process weld inspection

Lead Research Organisation: University of Strathclyde
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Abstract

This project is focused on sensing techniques for in-process monitoring and ultrasonic NDT of robotic welding. With the increasing quality standards and industrial requirements, the interest in this field is ever growing. The key advantage of inspecting during the welding process is that the weld quality would be known at the point of manufacture. This would lead to reduced lead times, reduced rework and a more efficient supply chain.

Aims & Objectives:
1. Investigate automated in-process, couplant free, ultrasonic NDE inspection of multi-pass fusion welds within a manufacturing process at high-temperature.
2. Investigate automated in-process, non-contact, ultrasonic NDE inspection of multi-pass fusion welds within a manufacturing process at high-temperature.
3. Investigate automated in-loop control of multi-pass fusion welds using ultrasonic NDE within a manufacturing process at high-temperature.

Results and Impact I am responsible for delivering a total of 7 tutorials to 4 groups of pupils (25 in total), which study in Coatbridge High and St Thomas Aquinas. My course is focused on robotics and aims to engage children with the topic and motivate them to enrol in university after they graduate.
