Career Acceleration Studentship in Organic Chemistry - The Development of Seamless Photochemical, Electrochemical and Thermochemical Daisy Chain Seque

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry

Abstract

The project is linked to the EPRSC Programme Grant EP/P013341/1 in which we are seeking to develop clean photochemical, thermochemical and electrochemical reactions in flow for the production of industrially relevant fine chemicals. Our approach will begin with a period of familiarisation, where William will seeking to apply some of our recently developed flow photochemical reactions in target oriented synthesis. Phase 2 will seek to extend these protocols to an array of related systems leading to new routes for 3D scaffold synthesis with a minimal waste stream. Phase 3 will seek to add further complexity by using the output of a photochemical reaction as the direct feedstock for subsequent thermochemical and/or electrochemical steps. Such 'daisy-chain' processes impart novelty and complexity, with the promise of achieving close to 100% efficiency in atom economy in line with the ideals set out in the Dial-a-Molecule road map.
