Use of EPR Spectroscopy to Study Molecular Electron Spin Qubits
Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Chemistry
Abstract
The project is relevant to the quantum technologies initiative, and University of Manchester support of Prof Winpenny's EPSRC Established Career Fellowship "From rings to nanostructures" (EP/R011079/1).
The question will use electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to study molecular electron spin qubits. We will begin by studying compounds in solution phase, to measure coherence times. We will then move to molecules that contain two qubits. We will study these in dilute solution using double electron-electron resonance (DEER) methods. Once this is successfully completed we will carry out the same experiments but with our two qubit molecules included in a diamagnetic host lattice. This will allow us to carry out DEER on orientated single crystals and perform entanglement experiments.
In the second half of the project more complicated molecules containing switches between two qubits will be studied, with the aim of perform universal quantum gates such as the CNOT gate.
