Identifying the EM counterparts to Gravitational Wave Events

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leicester
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

GW170817 involved the merger of two neutron stars, and was detected from gamma-rays to the radio, proving the need for a multi-wavelength approach. This project provides an opportunity to be at the heart of the characterization of electromagnetic counterparts to GW sources by undertaking coordinated searches for electromagnetic counterparts using many ground and space observatories observing across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Additionally will be working with colleagues in order to construct detailed theoretical models for transient sources, as well as analysis of GOTO and the analysis of other facility data, discover new classes of object and participate in the development of new ground and space facilities.
