Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Sch of Education and Social Work
Abstract
Single mothers living with their children in temporary accommodation have traversed through the
governmental systems of housing and welfare to arrive at this destination. The research project will
explore how the female headed single parent family has been rendered more vulnerable in society under
this current governmental administration. It will consider the historical and present day social
construction and representation of the single mother and the impact of this on identity and positioning in
wider society. To bring depth of understanding to the relationship between female single parents and the
current government, it will consider the ways in which societal institutions as governmental
representatives have presented to the mother as she traversed the road to homelessness. The
communications that mothers have received, face to face, remote and written, with authorities and with
services, will be documented and examined.
