Composition Change in the North Atlantic: Drivers and Impacts

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Chemistry

Abstract

In this project we will combine new state of the art simulations from the UKCA and UKESM-1 models to understand the causes and effects of changes in atmospheric composition across the North Atlantic basin. Large changes in the abundance of aerosols and trace gases are occurring but the role of man-made emissions versus natural variability is not completely clear. This project will help bring clarity to this important issue in this critical area for the climate system and for the UK, in terms of being the region most of our weather originates.

In this project we will evaluate the performance of the UKCA and UKESM-1 models using an array of airborne and ground based measurements being made as part of the NERC ACSIS project. In addition we will perform bespoke simulations that assess important new questions regarding emissions from next generation transport systems powered by non-fossil fuels
