Complex dynamics of non-equilibrium quantum systems

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Sch of Physics & Astronomy

Abstract

This project will be about using novel concepts and methods of statistical mechanics to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of open quantum systems of interest in both atomic and condensed matter physics. Particular focus will be put on the statistical properties of ensembles of quantum trajectories of open quantum systems, both for those systems with continuous-time dynamics (for example as generated by Markovian master operators) and those with discrete dynamics (evolving via quantum maps and/or periodically driven dynamics). A main aim will be to uncover unconventional non-equilibrium phases and dynamical transitions in these systems. The project will involve a combination of analytical and computational work, including the possible application of machine learning methods.
