Force imaging using frustrated total internal reflection

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Sch of Physics & Astronomy

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to develop a simple optical force sensor, through the principle of frustrated total internal reflection. This sensor would be capable of simultaneously resolving both local contact and local tractional forces of an object in contact with a waveguide. Developing a complete theoretical framework between the forces in question and the measured optical response is also of interest. Work in this area has thus far shown there are varying areas of interest in this concept, from use as a replacement for analogue fingerprinting methods, to designing more efficient footwear by tracking the local pressure and positions of wear on the wearer's shoe.
