Abstract

Grasping the soul: A practice-led investigation of storytelling, crime and digital narrative design, aimed at evaluating how participatory digital arts practice impacts personal transformation.

The societal challenge of prisoner rehabilitation exerts pressure on policy makers and public sector finances (Maruna, et al 2001). I spent time in prison (1995-6) and was subsequently driven to found 'Stretch' (www.stretch-charity.org) that has designed projects which facilitate transformation in criminal justice communities through artistic engagement since 2003, the last seven years with digital narratives (Fig. 1). The role the arts play in rehabilitation is now recognised (Creative Health, 2017 p.109-111). This recognition and the theory that a role for cultural institutions and educators as the 'keepers of narratives' and their political position in the education of the masses or oppressed
(Freire, et al 1970,1984) underpins my methodology
