Abstract
"This is a PhD research project in Bioengineering entitled Large scale microfluidics for low-cost effective algal dewatering. The project will focus on the use microfluidic systems as an alternative to existing downstream processing technologies for algae in collaboration with an industrial partner. The project will investigate different algae, different system designs, consider integration and scale-up of systems and industrial deployment and the impact of processing on algae.

Description | The project focuses on the development of the technology inertial focusing microfluidics specifically for the dewatering of microalgae. The key finding so far is successful operation of the technology at the high concentrations required for microalgal dewatering, where previous work has only shown successful operation at low concentrations which are not viable for industrial microalgal dewatering. This finding requires further development to show the viability for industrial dewatering of microalgae. |
Exploitation Route | The key findings so far indicate potential viability for the application of inertial focusing microfluidics as an alternative separation technique for small particles in many industries. If developed further this technology could then be used in place of some existing separation technologies. |
