UAV Mission Monitoring and Sequencing

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bristol
Department Name: Aerospace Engineering

Abstract

This research is aligned with the EPSRC CASCADE (Complex Autonomous aircraft Systems Configuration, Analysis and Design Exploratory) research grant and is contributing directly to the BRDIGE (Bridge inspection in congested area) case study within CASCADE.
This PhD aims to contribute to augmenting drone automation by introducing a level of modularity to the safety of the system. The proposed framework is inspired by a highly modular AI method used by the video game industry called Behaviour Trees (BT). BTs are used for designing non-play characters (i.e. bots) in video games. This method has been applied to a drone mission controller allowing for a variety of safety check and fallback actions to be considered depending on the operational needs.
