Fast Solution of the Heat Equation in Additively Manufactured Metals
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Birmingham
Department Name: Metallurgy and Materials
Abstract
The research will be on investigating the feasibility of simulating the heat transfer inside the build volume of a powder bed additive manufacturing machine. The student will investigate different possible algorithms and code them in CUDA to run on an Nvidia gpu. The results will be compared with experimental measurements. The outputs will be: which algorithm is most appropriate and why? How large a volume can be simulated with sufficient accuracy (validated against experiment) in real time or faster? Can the outputs be correlated with metallurgical properties of parts built in this way?
