Nuclear Physics with the ALICE Collaboration

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy

Abstract

The theory of strong interactions, the Quantum-Chromo-Dynamics (QCD), predicts a phase transition at high temperature between hadronic matter, where quarks and gluons are confined inside hadrons, and a deconfined state of matter, the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). The QGP formation can be reproduced in the laboratory thanks to ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. The ALICE experiment is designed to study Pb+Pb collisions at a center-of-mass-energy for pairs of interacting nucleons at the scale of a few TeV
