Images of Rome in Twelfth-Century English and German Historiography

Lead Research Organisation: Durham University
Department Name: History

Abstract

My project is an interregional exploration of the binding and orientating potential of narrative images. It analyses depictions of Rome in twelfth century English and German historical writing, drawing on the work of anthropologists, literary scholars and historians in order to adopt an approach which is both interdisciplinary and comparative. With its layers of ancient, medieval and modern architecture, Rome is a symbol of cultural transformation. By comparing two historiographical traditions my project will explore the conceptual structures that underlie modern European historical cultures.
