Studies of ice nucleation and its implications in Earth's atmosphere
Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Earth Atmospheric and Env Sciences
Abstract
This project is focussed on understanding mixed-phase clouds and how the ice phase developed by interacting with turbulence. There are 3 strands of research: modelling time-dependent clouds to understand the role of slow-stochastic nucleation vs the recycling of ice nucleating particles within circulating air patterns. The measurement of ice nucleation using a new cold stage and other related lab studies and a measurement campaign to back up the modelling studies.

| Results and Impact | I collaborated with a local glass artist as part of the Soapbox Art & Science event held at the Bluedot Festival, Jodrell Bank, in July 2018. Soapbox Science is a public outreach platform promoting women in science and the work they do, with the aim of inspiring more children to get into science. It involved standing on a soapbox and engaging members of the public with my research, using the glass-work produced specifically for my project on ice crystals. |

| Results and Impact | After-school 'Pizza and prosecco speed networking' event for Year 8 girls, provided by The Ogden Trust. Mums and daughters had the opportunity to talk to 20 women in a variety of physics related careers, with the aim of encouraging more girls into studying physics. The event received much positive feedback and ran again the following year. |
