Understanding acute sarcopenia: moving the muscle from laboratory to bedside to identify mechanisms towards intervention

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Institute of Inflammation and Ageing

Abstract

Sarcopenia has, to date, been investigated in community dwelling older adults in laboratory conditions (chronic sarcopenia). The greatest changes in older people's function however are seen after hospitalisation - resulting in over 300,000 older adults referred for new social care or care home placement following hospitalisation in England alone (8). This project will fully characterise acute sarcopenia, determine underlying mechanisms, and assimilate evidence for interventions.
