Mobile Air Quality Monitoring
Lead Research Organisation:
Loughborough University
Department Name: Wolfson Sch of Mech, Elec & Manufac Eng
Abstract
This project will produce a system that will be able to monitor various gases and particulate matter at ground level or low-level altitudes. Designs will be considered for various data capture methods (e. g. UAV, bicycle, body mounted, etc). Measured air quality data will be logged and presented using data visualisation tools. Methods for accessing the data from the system using internet services will also be investigated.
A prototype has been created as part of an undergraduate final year project, however it would be of great interest to develop this project further. Experiments have already taken place across the Loughborough University campus by transporting the device using bicycles and UAVs. The roadmap for this project looks to re-engineer the device to integrate the sensors onto a custom circuit board to decrease the physical size, weight and future production costs. Also, as the device can collect large datasets from a variety of gas and particulate measurements, a suitable "Big Data" solution for visualising the data will be implemented.
This project will be supported by the Sustainability team at Loughborough University, providing in-kind support
