Fundamental Study on Advanced Thermal Treatment of Volatile Organic Material

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Chemical Engineering

Abstract

Fluidised bed gasification is gaining extraordinary attention nowadays as it unlocks the potential for most of the future Waste-to-Fuels processes. The main purpose of this project is to deliver a programme of high quality research in thermochemical treatment of waste feedstock for advanced fuels generation using fluidised bed reactors. Within this framework it is not clear how volatile particles like biomass and waste devolatilise when enter a thermal reactor for syngas production. This project looks at the fundamental analysis of all thermal degradation steps to advance research on steam/oxygen gasification, waste pyrolysis, and the reforming of synthetic gas for catalytic applications in fluidised beds. Advanced imaging techniques including X-Rays are used to investigate internal fluid dynamics inside industrial reactors, to highlight common failure mechanisms and inform optimum operation.
