Abstract

This research aims to assess whether engagement with heritage sites in the UK impacts visitor's mental health and well-being. Through comparative analysis of different demographics of visitors to a range of heritage sites, it will investigate the effects of visits on a range of stakeholders, such as visitors and volunteers. This research will provide an understanding of the role heritage sites can play in creating healthier and happier societies. Since completing an MA in Public History and Heritage I have worked as a heritage consultant on a number of projects across the UK. Through this work in the sector, I have observed, and professionally evaluated, the positive social effects involvement in heritage projects can have on stakeholders. This doctoral thesis seeks to examine these anecdotal observations and professional research through a robust academic research project.
